To the modern day reader, the term â€Å"Gothic† can often be confused with a certain genre of style involving men and women who wear baggy clothes, black eyeliner and lip-stick and spike their hair and has very little to do with the architecture that was predominantly used from the twelfth to the sixteenth century. In fact the term â€Å"Gothic† was coined by Renaissance Italians as a derogatory term referring to the Goths or Visigoths who were vanquished by Clovis in the sixth century and left no monumental trace of their invasion and therefore had no influence on what is now remembered as Gothic architecture. Despite the negative connotation behind this style of architecture, it has had an enormous impact on the history of architecture. Prior to Romanesque and Gothic architecture, living accommodations were significantly simpler. Structures were not able to support anything but wood roofs, which leaked, rotted and burned easily. Rooms were often dark because structures were also not able to support large windows and as a result, very little light was able to enter into buildings. Romanesque was the beginning of change, when wood roofs were replaced by stone and brick however, Romanesque architecture was often unstable and was known to collapse upon builders as they worked. The government influences the industrial relations through its rules, policies, laws and agreements. I have ensured that the employees feel comfortable in coming up with any grievances or issues to me and I have been able to solve the issues to a large extent. I have ensured that the employees are involved in the decision making practices of the organization and they are able to keep their views in front of the management. I have also ensured that there are no unfair labor practices within the organization. All these activities have helped in ensuring uninterrupted production and increase in the moral of the employees. Owen`S Dulce Et Decorum Est Owen's poem serves to uncover the lie that it is sweet and becoming to die for one's country. Owen's use of diction, vivid language, and graphic imagery emphasizes his point. The poem describes the fatigue, blindness, evil, obscenity, death, sufferings, and disgust of war. It shows the true life of a soldier, lying low, ill, endlessly trudging through mud with bloody feet, away from and into the pain of gas poisoning of comrades, and away from the injured and dead, but never away from the memories. It ends with a bitter attack on those who see glory in the death of others. The only beauty in this poem is an idea that rest will come. Unfortunately, it is pointed out that the only rest is an undignified death; for those who sleep, sleep restlessly. The ugliness of war is described as low like old beggars under sacks, diseased coughing like hags, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind, exhausting drunk with fatigue, pointless flound'ring . . . Dim . . As under a green sea . . . drowning, careless of living or dead flung aside, evil like a devil's sick of sin, disgusting like eyes writhing . . . blood gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs. . . vile, incurable sores, bitter as the cud, and merciless on innocent tongues. The comparisons of lines 1, 14, 20, and 23 through 24, describe the soldier as someone the reader can see and war as the disease Owen wants the inexperienced to understand. 1 Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, 14 As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. 20 His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin; This places the reader in the soldier's place?drowning, stumbling, and fumbling--and shows the lack of glory in war. These lines tell the reader what a man becomes once he has been to war?less than an admirable human, drowned in evil deeds, and emotionless. Lines 23 and 24 give war a character. 23 Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud 24 Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,-- They create a tangible entity for the reader. They show the truth of the creature of war?cancerous, bitter, incurable?and its eternal, undignified effect on the innocent. Owen uses plural pronouns and the past tense to describe what cannot be undone. He uses we and our to include the reader as part of the ill-equipped troops?as tired marchers and witnesses to death and pain. Owen changes to the present tense and singular pronouns to prove he was there and speaks specifically to those who could not know without experience. He relates urgency through his personal experiences to those who might believe that to die in war is a glorious and heroic act. He points a very strong finger at those who would influence the innocent. The thought of killing, watching comrades be killed, and of constantly trying to survive is horrific. Owen's precise details of the emotions, thoughts and sights of the soldier, succeed to drive the full horror home. The scene witnessed by Owen is detailed enough to seem familiar. All the senses are used by Owen; the constant inputs of sound, smell, touch as well as sight increase the dimensions of his images. He attempts to connect war with other aspects of human suffering. The problem started when the chief financial officer (CFO) indicated that the financial performance of the hospital has been deteriorating over the last 6 months. Hospitals throughout the world are operating on tight budgets. Therefore operational managers must find ways to reduce cost and â€Å"manage productivity across all areas and job categories† (Langabeer, 2008, p.129). There are many factors contributing to this problem: The hospital is exceeding its budget, the new facility across town has continued to cut into Middlefield’s market share by admitting more patients, and the number of admissions to the hospital is declining each month, while more uninsured patients are seeking services at the facility. The hospital has to change its strategies in order to improve its overall financial performance. These strategies include: spending on accounting systems to cut costs, increasing the accounts receivable collections, or increasing legitimacy with stakeholders and donors; improving efficiency through professional administration; spending on advertising to increase revenues through increased market share and premium prices; and offsetting patient care losses with substantial net income from sources not directly connected to patient care. After convening with the Middlefield Hospital management team, we were able to identify the core facts that my recommendations were built on. Medicare is responsible for 37 percent of all community hospital revenues, and reimbursement for capital expenses constitutes only about 7 percent of this revenue. In addition, the patient population of Middlefield Hospital is comprised of more and more Medicare, Medicaid, and uninsured patients and fewer patients have commercial insurance. In order to increase the net income the hospital should invest in advertising. Furthermore, advertising is likely to yield significant gains in Middlefield by attracting profitable patients. In return, the hospital should get ready to be shopped as many of our existing patients will be looking for other high-quality, fairly-priced providers. To retain our patients and attract new ones, the hospital’s trained-staff should be ready for the question of cost from empowered direct-pay patients. They also need to be prepared with a price list and a clear statement of what services are provided in Middlefield. To increase the hospital’s quality improvement program, I recommend that Middlefield reach out to their patients regularly. This can be achieved by following simple steps such as; assigning a staff member to call selected patients one month after their visit to see how they are doing; print their schedule and circle who to call; put notes in the chart as needed; pre-schedule annual exams and follow-ups for the on-going care; and to be proactive for patients as many will not remember to call. This is especially important when people are paying for more care themselves. According to our text book, surveys can be used as another tool to measure patient’s satisfaction with the hospital offered-care â€Å"Hospital survey was developed and implemented to periodically measure hospital care from the patient’s perspective. Results are intended to help hospitals improve their performance in areas identified as consumer concerns†. My other recommendation is merging into wellness programs. They are available in many forms depending on what the community needs. Such preventive programs can be identified by soliciting feedback from the hospital’s community, physicians and other health care providers. Wellness programs may include health risk assessments, exercise promotion, diagnosis-specific disease management, nutrition, weight loss, body mechanics, yoga, parenting and stress management. Because of the competition with a nearby hospital, wellness programs can be customized to meet specific community or employer requirements. The hospital may also partner with larger organizations such as the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society to attract new patients to seek services at Middlefield. Emphasis on the intended positive effects of managed care is vital at this stage of improving the hospitals financial performance. By having a single point of healthcare management, we believe efficiencies are maximized and effectiveness of care delivery is ensured to the benefit of the covered subscribers. Middlefield should adopt a high level of intellectual resources that ideally operate to control costs and resourcefully allocate healthcare services. To help reduce the cost of the employee’s health plan, Middlefield can offer financial incentives to its employees by providing cost effective care, encouraging positive outcomes, and giving the employees the chance to get involved in preventive programs so they will have a healthier life-style. Curriculum used: Third Year High School (English III) V. Textbook Analysis: This book offers a practical approach to the fundamentals of speech improvement. Since speech is a communication, there are a number of factors that the reader must consider. If he wishes to be an effective communicator of his thoughts are feelings. The following premises will discuss each part of the book about their content, implication, and efficiency. A. Title Page The book is covered with a yellow- colored skin with the title pointed on it. E. Chapter Analysis A. Part 1: On Public Speaking Chapter 1: What public speaking involves? The chapter deals with the definition of public speaking. It also presents different definition from various authors of public speaking. Since the book is used for language subjects in secondary, the content of chapter one satisfy the demands of a newbie speaker who will read this book. The student will easily understand the ideas of chapter one because the words are clearly defined and the examples given are congruent to the reality of life the book describes. Chapter 4: Preparing the speech In this chapter the content is all about how will the student prepare a speech. There are factors that the student must consider as a speaker before making a speech. How to become an interesting and effective speaker are being underscore in this chapter. It also includes suggestions in preparing a speech to be a great public speaker. As a good speaker, every individual must know how to make a plan on how to produce or write an interesting beginning and a remarkable ending. The book suggests the ways in choosing a topic or a subject considering the audience, occasion, and the availability of the materials to be used in the speech. This chapter discussed the problems in listening. Basically, this is a very interesting topic for the readers who are experiencing problems in listening since talking is such a natural and endless activity that we perform in daily. After discussing how to speak, this chapter aims to illustrate different purposes why we speak. The student is lucky to have this part of the book, only limited books presents comprehensive details about different purpose of speeches. They could practice and inculcate in their minds the variation of speeches according to specific purpose. As expected, this chapter provided examples of speeches depending on its specific purpose of such. It presented narrative explanation of each type of purposeful speeches. Chapter 15: Dramatic interpretation and play production. This is the last objective chapter of the books and this is another phase of public speaking. This time it tackles about drama and play production. As a public speaker being an actor is a must. The students and teachers shall deal with dramatic interpretation and play production as distinct special forms of public speaking. Principles and factors to consider in Drama were presented comprehensively. It will surely benefit for all the students. B. Part II. On Speech Improvement Students who desire to master the pronunciation of English or American vowels and consonant sounds that give them difficulties in the roduction of these sounds. This is a special part of the book wherein from lesson (1-51) are presented for the enhancement of the student’s proficiency in speaking. The students will be provided guidelines during the production of these sounds such as the position of the tongue, type of the sound, lip formation, etc. Students who wish to be proficient in the pronunciation o f the English or American show some clusters must always bear in mind that these consonant clusters are among difficult sounds for speakers of other language. It has a â€Å"Speech Improvement Part† that is relevant to the book content and it captured the interest of the students because of its contents that contains oral reading and acting activities that will develop the student’s skills in reading and speaking. And also it helps the teacher to evaluate the individual progress of the students. 2. Examples Are the examples appropriate to the lives and interests of the students? Do the examples fit closely with the concepts they are supposed to be explaining? The examples in the textbook are appropriate and interesting because it helps the pupils to learn more. The textbook also provides an illustration in the example which emphasizes the real life situation where pupils will learn. 3. Exercises / Tasks Do the exercises or tasks provide enough variety to meet the needs of different kinds of learners in the class (es)? Will they be of interest to those students? The exercises or tasks provide enough variety to meet the needs of different kinds of learners in the class by means of providing activities which are systematically organized to develop reading proficiency. It meets the interest of the learners, because it includes enjoyable activities which they can relate and apply the things that they have learned. 4. Presentation / Format Does the book look right for these Students? Are the illustration and other graphical and design elements appropriate for their age and educational level? Is the printed text easy to read and appropriate for their reading level? Is the mix between print and white space balanced so that readability is enhanced and appropriate? Does the book have an index, appendices, or other sections that are usable by students? Is the book well-constructed will it last a term of hard use by students? Yes, because the illustrations, graphical designs elements and all its contents are appropriate for the student’s age and grade level. It is conducive for learning. I recommend that all pictures/illustrations must be in practical and visible design regarding with some activities, I prefer to suggest putting some rubrics for evaluation purposes. With their young age, I think this kind of activities is not truly appropriate. 3rd year high school students are in the stage of reading refinement wherein they can figure out the purpose for reading. Activate background knowledge of the topic in order to predict or anticipate content and identify appropriate reading strategies. Attend to the parts of the text that are relevant to the identified purpose and ignore the rest. This selectivity enables students to focus on specific items in the input and reduces the amount of information they have to hold in short-term memory. And of course select strategies that are appropriate to the reading task and use them flexibly and interactively. Students comprehension improves and their confidence increases when they use top-down and bottom-up skills simultaneously to construct meaning. Check comprehension while reading and when the reading task is completed. Monitoring comprehension helps students detect inconsistencies and comprehension failures, helping them learn to use alternate and the directions to be followed or if they can’t put a glossary in the back of the book can surely help the learners if they can see the meanings of hard words they have encountered. Another thing is the book must have an index, because an index seeks to direct the reader/s to all names and subjects on which the book has information. Index can set as a guide with the learners if they are in trouble of finding their lessons.
